On this day in 1980: ‘Funkytown’ by Lipps Inc. was enjoying their THIRD week at #1 on the U.S. singles chart. It would spend one more week at #1 for a total of four weeks, before giving up the top spot to Paul McCartney’s ‘Coming Up’ at the end of June.

“Funkytown” reached the top spot in the United States, West Germany, Canada, Austria, Switzerland, Norway, the Netherlands, and Australia, among many other countries. VH1 ranked the song at #36 on their list of the 100 Greatest One-Hit Wonders of the 1980s in 2009. Time Out listed the song at #44 on their list of The 100 best party songs in 2018
