This Day In 80s Music, June 25th

On this day in 1984: Prince released his sixth studio album Purple Rain, the first to feature his band the Revolution, and the soundtrack to the 1984 film of the same name. The first two singles from the album, ‘When Doves Cry’ and ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, topped the US singles charts, and were hits around the world, while the title track went to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On this day in 1988: Debbie Gibson went to #1 on the U.S. singles chart with ‘Foolish Beat’, making Debbie (age 17), the youngest female to write, produce and record a U.S. #1 single. It would spend one week in the top spot.

“Foolish Beat” was the fourth single from American singer Debbie Gibson. Originally recorded in the winter of 1987 for the Dream Tour, months prior to its inclusion on Gibson’s album ‘Out Of The Blue’ the single topped the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 on June 25, 1988,

In the music video, Gibson typecasts herself as a young performer who recently broke up with her boyfriend; although she now regrets jilting him and wants to make amends, he brushes off her efforts to do so. The video ends with him debating about seeing her show having brought a bouquet of flowers for her, he drops the flowers in a trash can deciding that he did not want to get hurt again, then walks off into the distance.
