This Day In 80s Music, October 18th

On this day in 1989: During a gig at The Los Angeles Coliseum, California, (opening for The Rolling Stones) Guns N’ Roses front man Axl Rose announced that this would be the last Guns N’ Roses concert unless the band members “got their shit together.” He was referring to their use of heroin.

Also on this day in 1989: Janet Jackson was enjoying her second week at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with ‘Miss You Much.’ The song would go on to spend four consecutive weeks in the top spot.

‘Miss You Much’ was released as the lead single from her fourth studio album Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814. The single spent four weeks at #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, making it the longest running #1 single of 1989. “Miss You Much” was the second-best selling single of 1989 and the biggest radio airplay song of the year. Billboard later listed “Miss You Much” as Janet Jackson’s all-time biggest Hot 100 single. “Miss You Much” received two Grammy Award nominations, and was awarded the Billboard Award for the Top Hot 100 Single of the Year and two American Music Awards.
