On this day in 1980: Marshall Tucker Band bass player Tommy Caldwell died of injuries from a car accident at age 30 in his hometown of Spartanburg, South Carolina. Caldwell was the original front man for the Marshall Tucker Band between 1973 and 1980.

On this day in 1984: Phil Collins was starting his second of three weeks at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with ‘Against All Odds (Take A Look At Me Now).’ It would go on to be ranked the #5 song for the entire year of 1984 and ranked the #64 song for the entire 1980s decade. It was the first of seven #1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 for Phil Collins as a solo artist.
