On this day in 1987: David Bowie kicked off his 87-date Glass Spider world tour at the Feyenoord Stadium, Rotterdam, Holland. The tour’s set, described at the time as “the largest touring set ever,” was designed to look like a giant spider. It was 60 feet (18.3m) high, 64 feet (19.5m) wide and included giant vacuumed tube legs that were lit from the inside with 20,000′ (6,096m) of color-changing lights. A single set took 43 trucks to move.

Also on this day in 1987: U2 were starting their third and final week at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with “With or Without You.” It would go on to be ranked the #15 song for the entire year of 1987 by BIllboard Magazine on their year-end chart.
