This Day In 80s Music, January 19th

On this day in 1980: The Pretenders scored their first U.K. #1 hit with their third single ‘Brass In Pocket’. Singer Chrissie Hynde got the idea for the song’s title when, during an after-show dinner, she overheard someone enquiring if anyone had, “Picked up dry cleaning? Any brass in pocket?” Also on this day in 1980, the band’s self-titled debut album (which contains ‘Brass In Pocket’) started a four-week run at #1 on the U.K. album chart .

Also on this day in 1980: Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ started a 15-week run at #1 on the U.S. album chart. The group’s third U.S. #1 album, it went on to sell over 23 million copies in the U.S. alone. ‘The Wall’ is still the third largest grossing album in the U.S., behind Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ and “The Eagles Greatest Hits.”

Also on this day in 1980: Michael Jackson went to #1 on the U.S. singles chart with “Rock With You.”

‘Rock With You’ was written by Rod Temperton and produced by Quincy Jones. It was first offered to Karen Carpenter while she was working on her first solo album, but she turned it down. It was released on November 3, 1979, by Epic Records as the second single from Jackson’s fifth solo studio album ‘Off the Wall.’ It would be the third #1 hit of the 1980s, a decade whose pop singles chart would soon be dominated by Jackson.

It reached #1 on both the U.S. pop (Jackson’s third #1 on this chart) and R&B charts (Jackson’s second #1 on that chart). It spent a total of four weeks at the top position on the Billboard Hot 100 from January 19 to February 9, 1980, and six weeks (from January 5 to February 9, 1980) on the R&B chart. According to Billboard, the song was the fourth biggest single of 1980. It is also considered one of the last big hits of the disco era.
