This Day In Music, October 11th

On this day in 1981: The Rolling Stones performed at the Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, California, USA, as part of a 50-date North American tour. 95 fans were arrested after trouble broke out at the venue. The tour became the largest grossing of 1981, with $50 million in ticket sales.

On this day in 1986: Janet Jackson started a two week run at #1 on the US singles chart with ‘When I Think Of You’, her first U.S. #1. It was released on July 28, 1986, as the album’s third single. Written by Jackson, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, and produced by Jam and Lewis, the song is about a person who finds relief and fun in a lover.

‘When I Think of You’ became Janet Jackson’s first #1 single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, spending two weeks atop the chart. After “When I Think of You” reached #1, it made Janet Jackson and her brother Michael the first, and so far the only siblings to both have solo #1 singles on the Hot 100. At the time she was 20 years old, making Jackson the youngest artist since Stevie Wonder to top the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached #3 on the R&B chart (making it the only single from the Control album that did not top the R&B chart) and #1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1986. “When I Think of You” was the 32nd biggest Hot 100 single of 1986, as well as the 47th biggest Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs single of 1986 and the 22nd biggest Hot Dance Club Play single of 1986
