On this day in 1980: The Police became the first Western pop group to play in Bombay, India in over ten years when they played a one off gig in the city.

On this day in 1983: Duran Duran went to #1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Is There Something I Should Know’. Their first #1 and their eighth single release. The group were on a U.S. promotional trip on this day in ’83, where they were greeted by 3,000 screaming fans at an in-store appearance in New York City.

On this day in 1985: Radio stations in South Africa banned all of Stevie Wonder’s records after he dedicated the Oscar he had won the night before at The Academy Awards to Nelson Mandela.

On this day in 1988: Michael Jackson started a two week run at #1 on the U.S. singles chart with “Man In The Mirror.” The lyrics and music were written by Glen Ballard and Siedah Garrett, and produced by Jackson and Quincy Jones. It was released on February 6, 1988 as the fourth single from his seventh solo album, ‘Bad.’

The song is said to have been one of Jackson’s favorite songs. It was Jackson’s tenth #1 on the Hot 100 chart, and was certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA.
