This Day In 80s Music, November 11th

On this day in 1982: Prince kicked off his 87-date ‘1999’ North American tour at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Here’s a clip of Prince performing ‘1999’ on the tour about a month later in Houston, TX:

On this day in 1983: Mick Jagger appeared on the UK TV show ‘The Tube’ to defend the video to The Rolling Stones latest single ‘Undercover Of The Night’ which had been banned by the Independent Broadcasting Authority. The Tube aired the video, minus the scene where Mick was shot. The single peaked at #8 on the UK chart.

The music video was made in Mexico City, featuring Jagger as a detective helping a woman (played by Elpidia Carrillo) follow her boyfriend’s (also played by Jagger) kidnappers with Keith Richards as the leader of the kidnappers, who eventually shoots Jagger. The music video, directed by Julien Temple was considered to be too violent for MTV (they did eventually air an edited version, but not before 9 PM due to the violent imagery).

On this day in 1989: Bad English started a two week run at #1 on the U.S. Singles chart with “When I See You Smile,” a song written by Dianne Warren. It was released in September 1989 as the second single from their self-titled debut album released that year. The power ballad is the band’s most successful song, reaching #1 in both the U.S. and Canada.

In the video the band is performing on a stage, which contains close-up shots of its members. The footage was taken at one of their arena concerts. It shows Jonathan Cain’s distinctive synthesizer opening and moves into the soft initial vocal work of John Waite. The tempo picks up with Deen Castronovo’s drum work and Neal Schon’s trademark guitar during which Waite becomes more emphatic vocally; the song finishes with Waite’s soft vocals. The video was directed by Jonathan Cain.
