On this day in 1985: Madonna took over the top spot on the U.S. singles chart with ‘Crazy For You’. It would end the four week run at #1 for U.S.A. for Africa’s ‘We Are the World’ which had been #1 since mid April.

‘Crazy For You’ was recorded for the film ‘Vision Quest’ and was the lead single on the film’s soundtrack album. ‘Crazy For You’ earned Madonna her first Grammy Award nomination in the Best Female Pop Vocal performance category. The song became Madonna’s second #1 single on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top of the charts in Australia and Canada. It also peaked at #2 in Ireland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

‘Crazy For You’ would only spend one week #1 on the U.S. singles chart, being knocked off by another movie soundtrack song, ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ by Simple Minds from the ‘Breakfast Club’ soundtrack on May 11th.
